Wildlife Photography

When I was in high school I took a photography class using my father's Rolleiflex camera.  It has been difficult for me to put down a camera ever since.   Although I make my living as an engineer,  I try to pick up my camera whenever I can.   Recently, I have tried to apply my training and experience as a certified portrait photographer to the challenge of photographing wild animals.   I have concluded that it is much easier to photograph people--even with all of their quirks—than it is to photograph wildlife!  For one thing, when photographing wildlife you have to work with available light and other conditions that are totally out of your control.  I have yet to encounter a black bear that has allowed me to set up my flash units and use a Sekonic light meter to measure a 3:1 lighting ratio on its face.   Wildlife photography also requires the right equipment along with solid technical knowledge of how to use it--that's where the engineering background comes in handy.   However, the most challenging aspect for me is patience.   There are many times that I set out to get great wildlife photographs and came back with nothing.  However, as evidenced by the picture above, I sometimes get lucky.  This shot above was taken at the Blackwater National Wildlife refuge very early on a cold January morning.   The eagles were close to the road and didn't seem to notice me.  This shot shows the eagle on the right slipping as he lands on the ice.  This photograph took second place in the Chesapeake Bay Report Card photo contest.   You can read more about the report card here:  http://ian.umces.edu/ecocheck/report-cards/chesapeake-bay/2012/
