My photograph made the cover of the October/November 2014 National Wildlife Magazine--a publication of the National Wildlife Federation. I've had some photographs published in the magazine before--but this is the first time I've had a photograph make the cover. I took this picture in late March of 2013 from a photo blind at the National Audubon Society Rowe Sanctuary on the Platte River in Nebraska. Because the birds are easily spooked, I entered the blind well before sunset on the previous day. When I woke up it was raining and the Sandhill Cranes were standing perfectly still--almost as if they were posing for me--which was great since the low light conditions required me to use a relatively slow shutter speed to avoid excessive noise.
